| The House - Layout |
Kinross House is a large building, though compact.
It has four stories, plus a mezzanine floor cunningly lit by small
windows on the north and south elevations and reached by the 'page's
stairs'. Other innovations introduced by Bruce include the introduction
of corridors and the imaginative use of curved wings. The extensive
vaulted basement was also unusual in that it housed the complete working
area for the large number of servants who were therefore able to go
about the business of running the house without disturbing the family
and their guests.
The present porch was added in 1902 by Sir Basil Montgomery and he
was also responsible for the ceiling of the ballroom or grand salon
on the first floor, taking Dunsterfield's elegant plasterwork over
the great staircase as his model.
